Significance of Visuals: Ever heard of a theory, where a person asks you not to think about an elephant, and instantly an elephant image pops up in your mind? Not only does this prove our rebellious nature, but also that we think in images. We think, memorize and remember in visuals, even while reading a book, with each murder mystery, we can visualize our protagonist’s expressions as the author narrates his emotions. It must be hard for you to remember words from your favourite poetry that you read in a schoolbook, while you might easily be able to remember the first time someone recited poetry in front of you. Isn’t this astonishing? Well, simply because visuals stimulate emotions. Our brain can very easily capture and store important visuals and memories, but it gets tough to memorize words. Many studies in the past have indicated the power of visuals.

Tracing back to history, visual expressions have been in communication for ages, taking into account the sculptors and human imitations on the walls. Even today, ever since a child begins to pick up a crayon, different colours instantly draw an appeal to them, and well, of course, they always have a doodle ready with their own emotions carved into the walls of our home.

Why Visual: For Students, visuals are more appealing than plain text for learning. This helps in igniting curiosity and intuition in young minds. It is pretty simple, where a child is asked to imagine the 3 sides of Cube; this can now be shown visually to give the child a better insight into the concept. Where a child is explained about the human digestive system, the entire process can be shown through a visual representation.

Not only the child prefers the clarification of the subject, but he or she can also rather enjoy learning on the subject, which brings us to the next very important point; Visuals increase student engagement, increasing attendance and performance simultaneously.

Online Learning: It doesn’t matter where in the world you’re sitting. With a good connection and the heart to learn, Online Learning is an extended opportunity for learners everywhere.

One-to-One Interaction – Fear of getting neglected often is a concern when it comes to online classes. It is easy for a teacher to not notice if a child understands what is being taught. Timely One-to-one interactions allow us to prevent this from happening.

Open Learning Environment – Believe it or not, it is very common for a child to feel pressured about discussing and asking questions in a class full of students learning much faster than him or her. Online classes don’t throw any spotlight on any child, providing them with an open environment, to raise questions, enter discussions and simultaneously research on the same topic for better understanding.

Faster Doubt Solutions – Online Doubt Classes are the classes specifically dedicated to doubts and queries. Instead of waiting for another day to get your queries solved, a child can get them solved instantly with time to time online doubt classes.

Practice Papers and Tests – Always a good idea to practice for perfection. Online practice papers and tests allow a student to assess his progress faster than usual, with instant results and a detailed analysis of his report. This also prepares them beforehand with online paper patterns for the future.

Talking about ways to learn with visuals, while there are many ways in-person, Online Learning is also another most recently believed a successful way of learning for a child, with its perks to offer.

Activities to enhance Visual Learning at HOME:

Did you know that there is an entire teaching methodology purely based on Visual Thinking Strategy i.e. VTS? Well, as the name suggests, it is focused on Visual literacy, enhancing student’s thinking abilities. The more we allow our mind to expand its limitations, we give it the right space to grow, as it requires.

A child needs to be able to visualize, allowing him or her to observe and think more critically with time. The classroom is not necessarily the only way for a child to improve visualization. There are many activities that parents and children, both, can indulge in.

Here are a few activities to enhance visual learning in children, which we can keep in mind:

Reading: Reading a book not praised without a reason. A reading culture not only improves a child’s vocabulary, storytelling and sentence usage while giving them substantial knowledge, but also allows the child to step out of his comfort zone, and visualize what he reads as motions. A great way to improve his image.

Story Writing: Another subtle way of adding precision to his imagination, testing children’s observation skills, while giving the story they visualize an actual structure.

Pictionary: Ever heard of this game? It is easy, you divide into two teams, the first team gives a word to a contestant of the second team, which that contestant has to picture/draw for his/her team for them to identify. The loop goes on, while the child begins connecting a visual relation to the things around them. This is a fun way to learn, and also have fun with the family.

You can find your way of Visual Learning, as long as it enhances the child’s imagination with a little added effort.
